About the BBZ

The Centre for Biotechnology and Biomedicine is an essential component in the long-lasting continuation of the biotechnology initiative of the State of Saxony at the Leipzig University. The focus of the research at the BBZ is directed at the following three areas:

  • Firstly, molecular and cellular structures are identified and their application in novel therapeutic approaches is developed. Methods for protein structure analysis as well as biochemical, pharmacological and experimental methods allow for the assessment of the potential of proteins for pharmaceutical development.

  • Secondly, biotechnological methods for the improved utilization of proteins in therapy are investigated, reviewed and further developed. In particular, innovative delivery systems for protein and peptide-based therapeutics are tested and established.

  • Thirdly, controlling the effectiveness and bioavailability is crucial for product development, thus keeping track of an active substance (monitoring) until reaching the target site is of therapeutic and economic importance. Through biophysical, biochemical and biological monitoring, it should be established and therefore ensured, whether therapeutics are stable, their target location is reached, and whether the desired effects are mediated, thus optimizing therapy monitoring.

In all three areas, the aim is to develop tools and instruments that allow for rapid transfer to other systems and provide fast and efficient economic utilisation.
Specifically, the potential of therapeutics should be assessed and therapy-monitoring systems evaluated for their usefulness and implemented in an added value chain jointly with industrial partners.

The BBZ includes members from the six science faculties: the Faculty of Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology, the Faculty of Chemistry and Mineralogy, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The General Assembly elects the Board of Directors. The Board appoints the Chief Executive. The Director and the Board of Directors are assisted in the administration of the centre by the executive board.

Structure of the BBZ

The Centre for Biotechnology and Biomedicine cooperates closely with other interdisciplinary centres of the University: the Interdisciplinary Centre for Bioinformatics, the Translational Centre for Regenerative Medicine and the (IFB) Adiposity Diseases. In addition, the BBZ is involved in collaborative research projects: the Collaborative Research Centre 610 (protein states with cell-biological and medical relevance), the graduate school BuildMoNa (Leipzig School of Natural Sciences - Building with Molecules and Nanoobjects) which is sponsored by the Excellence Initiative of the German Research Foundation DFG, the Research Training School InterNeuro (GK 1097 "Interdisciplinary Approaches in Cellular Neuroscience”), Leipzig’s Research Program LIFE (Leipzig’s Interdisciplinary Research Complex for Molecular Causes of Environmental and Lifestyle-Associated Diseases), funded by Saxony’s State Excellence Initiative and the TRR 67 (development of new biomaterials for the healing of bone and skin tissue).

In the three profile-forming areas of research, "Molecular and Cellular Communication", "Brain, Cognition, Language" and "Environmental Changes and Disease", the BBZ contributes in profile enhancing of the research. Thereby internationally competitive research is combined with an appealing doctoral qualification.

In the BIO CITY LEIPZIG science and business operate under one roof. The BBZ provides biotechnology companies with offers of cooperation in the form of contract research and scientific services and is involved in the utilisation of research achievements. This can lead to both the development of new marketable products and thus to the possible establishment of new, spin-off biotechnology firms by other researchers and otherwise provide an outstanding, attractive and innovative environment for existing biotechnology/biomedical companies. In Leipzig, the BIO CITY along with the Centre for Biotechnology and Biomedicine forms the nucleus of the BioCity campus and is in the immediate vicinity of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology and of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.
